- Halton Healthcare Services (HHS) is building a new hospital in Oakville and with a scheduled opening date of December 2015, the 50-acre construction site at Third Line and Dundas Street is quickly being transformed into a 1.6 million square-foot state-of-the-art healthcare facility. When it opens, the new hospital will replace the current Oakville Trafalgar Hospital.
- Built to meet the needs of Oakville’s growing population, the new hospital will have capacity for 457 beds with built space and flexibility to grow to 602 beds in the future. Some of the most exciting features of the new facility include new and expanded hospital programs (including cancer care), special services for all development stages of life, as well as a modern design that supports family involvement in care delivery.
- “Eighty per cent of our inpatient rooms have been designed for a single patient,” said Sylvia Rodgers, HHS Chief Nursing Officer. “Having one patient per room helps to reduce stress, improve patient safety, minimize hospital-acquired infections and enhance privacy and confidentiality. These rooms also provide ample space so that caregivers can move around their patient easily with all the equipment that comes along with modern patient care.”
- Other features of the single-patient room include a washroom, complete with shower facilities, and a family zone with a couch that pulls out into a sleeper bed so that a family member can stay overnight with their loved one.
- The New Oakville Hospital project is one of the largest healthcare redevelopment projects in the province. The transition to the new facility will impact service delivery of over 170,000 admissions and ambulatory visits, 60,000 Emergency visits, 13,000 surgeries and 2,300 births. More than 50 programs/departments will be impacted as each transforms current clinical and business processes and redesigns workflows to suit the new environment.
