Milton’s Innovation Ecosystem

With one of the youngest, most highly-educated populations in Ontario, and a central location within the Toronto-Waterloo Innovation Corridor, it’s no wonder Milton has emerged as a leader of entrepreneurship, innovation, and knowledge-based business growth.

Milton’s Innovation Ecosystem strengthened through regional partnerships.

In support of the growing knowledge economy, Milton’s progressive leadership worked in partnership with Wilfrid Laurier University and several key community stakeholders to develop an initiative ecosystem in support of enabling entrepreneurial culture for business growth, start-ups, incubation, innovation, education and training.

The initiative took shape in 2014 with the opening of the Milton Education Village (MEV) Innovation Centre, providing a regionally cohesive approach to small business support services through partnerships with Haltech and Halton Region’s Small Business Centre.

Currently home to ten technology- intensive tenant companies, the Innovation Centre has helped foster the creation of more than 60 knowledge-based jobs locally. In addition, more than 1200 participants attended entrepreneurial support programming in 2016, with co-working memberships continuing to rise. The demand for office space and business services at the MEV Innovation Centre continues to exceed expectations, a true testament to Milton’s growing population of entrepreneurs.

In October of 2016 Milton celebrated the Province’s announcement of a university- led postsecondary site in Milton, focusing on science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM).The investment in post-secondary in the community will continue to develop the knowledge- economy, with a priority focus on establishing partnerships with local industry and encouraging local job creation.
