Revisiting Medical History.

While the Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital builds itself into one of the most advanced and state of the art health facilities in Canada, the area surrounding the hospital is developing right along with it. Becoming what some are calling, “Oakville’s Hospital District.” Palermo Medical Professional Centre, situated 1.2 kilometres from the hospital, is being constructed to join the area and become part of this prestigious district. But this particular building stands unique, bringing with it an organic element in its foundation – its own medical heritage.

In 1855, this Oakville plot was purchased by Dr. Anson Buck. Newly married, he built a large residence on the property, and with a license in “Physic, Surgery and Midwifery,” began his practice. Dr. Buck was a remarkable citizen with a career that spanned over 55 years. He tended to the sick and delivered many local babies. After the doctor’s passing in 1919, the property was passed to his daughter Minnie. Minnie was to sell the property. Though in the summer of 1933, the property long sold, Minnie invited over 500 guests to its grounds on the 100th anniversary of her father’s birth.

The Panoramic Photography Company of Toronto photographed the event. The historical photo depicts the home and crowd, made up of former patients and adults whose birth was aided by the doctor, on the lawn in front of the house. It is displayed at V.G.R. Investements’ office. This historical building will remain a new building in front of the pristine Palermo Medical Professional Centre. At 100,000 square feet, offering free parking on two-level parking garage for all tenants and patients, the building has a full-time building manager on-site and evening security guard.

“This building was developed with style, keeping mind efficiencies along with respecting the heritage of the area” says its architect, Lawrence Malek of Sirlin Giller & Malek. Tenants planning to move and expand there will be open in June 2014. Currently 70 per cent leased, the remaining space is available to Pharmacies, General Practitioners, Dental Groups, Physiotherapists, Psychologist, Chiropractor X-Ray and ultrasound & Diagnostic Imaging, Cardiologists and Specialists. The new medical centre has easy access to the QEW and 407 highways and public transit stops are frequent around the building With historical backbone, modern quality construction and located in one of Oakville’s coveted districts, The Palermo Medical Professional Centre is the perfect housing solution for any new or existing medical practice.
