Skills that will allow one to flourish in the fields of real estate finance, property development, economics, sustainability and real estate law.

The real estate industry propels the local, regional and national economies, but for many years Canada had just two undergraduate university degree programs in real estate. Ryerson University’s Ted Rogers School of Management (TRSM), in close consultation with industry leaders, launched its Real Estate Management program in 2013, the first such program based in Toronto, Canada’s largest city and financial capital.

The program’s innovative, experiential approach satisfies the growing industry need for graduates with a sound background in the business of real estate, specialized training in the professional skills demanded by employers in the real estate industry, and a first-hand knowledge of the local and regional real estate markets. The program also benefits from the invaluable advice and guidance of its Advisory Council, which includes Susan Allen (President of BOMA), Michael Brooks (CEO, RealPac), Peter Gilgan (Founder, CEO and Chairman, Mattamy Homes), Gerry Guidice (Global Head of Enterprise Real Estate for TD Bank Group), John Morrison (President and CEO of Choice Properties), Chuck Scott (CEO, Cushman & Wakefield Canada), and many other industry leaders.

The mission of TRSM’s Real Estate Management (REM) program

The mission is to provide business students with the skills, knowledge and practical experience to be effective and valuable employees for the industry immediately upon graduation.Areas of concentration within the program include commercial and residential development, project management, real estate investment and financing, property valuation, data analysis and real estate law. REM courses mix theory and practice, combining the presentation of fundamental and advanced concepts in real estate with statistical analyses of real estate data, case studies, team assignments, and presentations of project design, feasibility and marketing studies to expert faculty and prominent members of the Toronto real estate industry.

TRSM’s outstanding professional real estate education also features experiential learning opportunities outside the classroom, including placement with a growing number of Toronto real estate firms through Ryerson’s co-op program, participation in the student-run Real Estate Ryerson (RER) group, and numerous opportunities to network with industry professionals.

Students are also exposed to cutting-edge research by REM faculty

REM faculty has published in the field’s best academic journals, including the American Economic Review, Real Estate Economics, the Journal of Real Estate Economics and Finance, the Journal of Real Estate Research, the Journal of Transportation Economics, and many others. Each faculty member brings real-world experience to the classroom, having been employed by leading private and government institutions such as the Bank of Canada, CMHC, the US Federal Reserve System, Freddie Mac, and many more. Several faculty members also actively consult for the commercial development and mortgage finance industries in Toronto and act as advisors to the city, provincial, and the national governments of Canada and other nations.

Annual enrollment increase

Although the Real Estate Management program is relatively new, one measure of its quality is the placement of TRSM graduates in positions at prominent Toronto-area firms such as KingSett Capital, Royal LePage, Mattamy Homes and CBRE. An average annual enrollment increase of approximately 30 percent illustrates the attraction of the program as a means to successful professional real estate careers and as a rich resource for highly qualified full-time and co-op employees.

Best trained entry-level employees

The essential role of the Real Estate Management program and its bright future are summarized by Advisory Council member Michael Brooks, CEO of RealPac:

“I fully expect Ryerson’s Major in Real Estate Management to offer the best trained real estate graduates in Canada. Since it’s one of only three undergraduate real estate programs in Canada, and will have the biggest graduating cohort, with the largest selection of required and optional courses, that’s no idle boast. Real estate education in Canada has been recently undergoing a renaissance, and the increasing sophistication of the industry, increasing segmentation of roles, deeper investor interest, and greater academic coverage has meant the old days of learning on the job are gone. Employers can now expect better trained entry-level employees, who are better able to grasp not only existing practice, but also new ways of doing business. Located on Bay Street in the biggest city in Canada, Ryerson is uniquely positioned to emerge as the leading institution for real estate education. This is a great step forward for the real estate industry in Canada.”
